How pharmaceutical wholesale works in Kenya

A medicine reaches a pharmacy shelf in three steps. The marketing authorisation holder (MAH) registers the product with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. Wholesalers and distributors buy registered stock in bulk, warehouse it and deliver it. Pharmacies, hospitals and clinics buy from the wholesaler and dispense to patients.

Wholesale premises are licensed by the PPB separately from retail pharmacies. The register lists 532 of them. 86% are private limited companies, and 42% were established in 2020 or later - a sector that has grown fast. Nairobi alone holds 262 (49%), with the rest spread across 25 other counties. 2 are zero-rated premises, such as the county depots of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).

Checking a wholesaler before you buy

  1. Confirm the licence. Open the wholesaler's listing here and check its licence status and expiry. Current licences on the register run to 2026-12-31.
  2. Check who is in charge. Every premises names a superintendent; 530 of 532 list a registered pharmacist.
  3. Check the product, not just the supplier. Search the medicine register to confirm a product is registered in Kenya and who holds its authorisation.
  4. Watch for recalls. The safety alerts list shows recalled and falsified batches.
